The Maldives Police Service has identified a 29-year-old woman as the alleged mastermind behind a narcotics smuggling operation involving approximately 1.5 kilograms of drugs brought into the country.
According to information presented in court, Aminath Roona is suspected of orchestrating the importation of the drugs through another individual who travelled overseas and later returned to the Maldives carrying the narcotics in her luggage.
The case was reviewed by the Criminal Court, which ordered Roona and a second suspect, Alya Sharsa Naseer, to remain in custody for an additional 30 days while investigations continue.
The arrests were made during a police operation conducted on the night of April 17 following the seizure of a large quantity of narcotics.
Court documents state that investigators believe Roona played a leading role in coordinating the operation. Authorities allege that the drugs were imported under her direction and later brought into the country by Alya.
Investigators told the court that the narcotics were discovered inside luggage carried by Alya upon her arrival in the Maldives. Police also noted that her travel history showed multiple overseas trips within short periods and that evidence linked to the investigation had been recovered from her mobile phone.
Despite the allegations, court records indicate that Alya has been cooperating with investigators throughout the inquiry.
Both suspects are being investigated on allegations relating to the importation, possession, use, sale and trafficking of narcotics.
Earlier court filings had estimated the seized drugs at around 1.8 kilograms. However, more recent documents submitted to the court refer to approximately 1.5 kilograms of narcotics connected to the case.
During previous hearings, Roona reportedly requested access to body-camera footage recorded by arresting officers as part of her defence preparations.
Court documents further reveal that Alya is currently receiving treatment for depression.
Police investigations into the case remain ongoing.
