Two Men Arrested After High-Speed Motorcyclist Seriously Injures Police Officer

Two men have been taken into police custody following an incident in which a motorcycle travelling at more than 100 km/h struck and seriously injured a police officer at a checkpoint on the Sinamalé Bridge highway early Saturday morning.

In a statement issued just a while ago Police Service said the incident occurred at 4:29 a.m. as the motorcycle was travelling from Malé towards Hulhumalé.

The motorcycle struck a police officer who was carrying out his duties at a vehicle checkpoint, breaking the officer’s teeth and causing serious injuries to his face. The officer is receiving treatment at ADK Hospital.

Police said three other motorcycles were also involved in the incident. The motorcycle that struck the officer was stopped, and its two occupants were taken into custody. Police have also located two additional individuals and another motorcycle believed to be connected to the incident.

The Commissioner of Police strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate act intended to obstruct a special police operation targeting dangerous driving and undermine officers carrying out their duties.

Police said the incident involved a motorcycle travelling at more than 100 km/h towards officers stationed on the highway before crashing into a police barricade and hitting the officer.

The police chief reaffirmed that the ongoing operation would continue without interruption despite attempts to obstruct police work. He also warned that legal action against those involved in such acts would be strengthened within the limits of the law.

The incident comes amid heightened police enforcement against dangerous driving and speeding in Malé and Hulhumalé, where reckless motorists have raised safety concerns.
