Narcotics were found in plain sight on a table inside a room in Vilimalé where three well-known Maldivian actors were arrested, police told the Criminal Court today.
The arrests took place yesterday during a special anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Maldives Police Service.
The three actors are Ahmed Azmeel, known as Azey; Ismail Jumaih; and Mohammed Vishaal, known as Roman. Shahil Muhammad, Azmeel’s younger brother, was also arrested at the same location.
All four men face allegations of using and possessing narcotics, as well as trafficking the substances.
Court orders 15-day remand
The four suspects were brought before the Criminal Court today for a decision on their detention. The court ordered that all four be remanded for 15 days.
According to the remand order, police had to use force to open the door of the room after finding it locked. When officers entered, narcotics were reportedly visible on a table inside the room.
Police officers who attended the scene told the court that the preliminary weight of the seized substances met the legal threshold for drug trafficking.
Three suspects have previous drug-related records
According to the report, three of the four suspects, excluding Ismail Jumaih, have previous criminal records involving arrests and detention in connection with narcotics cases.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further details about the seized substances have yet to be disclosed in the report.
Tougher penalties for drug trafficking
The government has introduced amendments to the Maldives’ drug laws. Under the changes described in the report, trafficking narcotics can carry a life imprisonment sentence, replacing the previous maximum prison term of 25 years.
The amendments also prohibit reductions in sentences, pardons and release on parole for those convicted of serious offences of this nature.
