Man Arrested After Dangerous Motorcycle Ride, Crash With Police Car

A 26-year-old man has been arrested after riding a motorcycle dangerously at high speed on the Highway and crashing into a police vehicle while attempting to flee from officers after being told to stop and pull over.

Maldives Police said the man, Ahmed Fariz, 26, Snow Sky, K. Maafushi, was arrested in the early hours of October 4, 2026.

Police said they received information at around 3:52 a.m. about a motorcyclist travelling from Hulhumalé towards Malé on the highway without wearing a helmet and in a dangerous position on the motorcycle.

After identifying the rider, police instructed him to stop near the traffic lights in Malé. However, according to police, he failed to comply and accelerated along Boduthakurufaanu Magu in an attempt to flee.

Police said a patrol vehicle pursued him and repeatedly instructed him to stop. During the attempt to flee, the motorcycle collided with the police vehicle, causing damage to the car.

The man then allegedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled the area. Police later stopped and arrested him at Moonlight Hingun, in Malé, following patrol efforts in the area.

Police said Fariz has a history of repeated traffic violations and has MVR 44,000 in outstanding traffic fines. His previous offences include driving without a licence, driving against the one-way system, speeding, riding without a helmet, repeatedly driving while his licence was being held, dangerous driving and using modified motorcycle lights.

Police also said the incident occurred while Fariz was allegedly intoxicated.

He was presented before court for a decision on his detention and was remanded for seven days.

The Maldives Police Service said the investigation is ongoing.
