Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has voiced strong optimism about the future of the Maldivian tourism industry, pointing to its vital role in fueling national economic prosperity and enhancing the country’s prestige on the world stage.
In an official address marking National Tourism Day, Minister Saeed reflected on the 54-year journey of Maldivian tourism, praising its transformation from humble beginnings into a globally celebrated success story.
He emphasized that decades of steady expansion and strategic innovation have firmly established the Maldives among the top travel destinations worldwide.
Extending his greetings to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the pioneers who built the nation’s resort sector, Saeed also recognized the collective efforts of resort workers, local entrepreneurs, investors, and industry partners. He credited these stakeholders with sustaining the sector’s momentum over the decades.
According to the Minister, tourism remains the cornerstone of the national economy—generating long-term employment, boosting household incomes, and deepening the Maldives’ diplomatic and economic ties across the globe.
National Tourism Day is celebrated annually on October 3 to mark the historic launch of Kurumba Village (now Kurumba Maldives) on Vihamanafushi in 1972, the pioneer resort that introduced Maldivian hospitality to the world.
