Iran and the United States exchanged fresh attacks across the Gulf region on Saturday, with Tehran claiming to have targeted multiple US military installations while Washington intensified air strikes across southern and central Iran, as the conflict entered another day of escalation.
Iranian media and military statements said the country’s forces launched missile and drone attacks targeting US military facilities in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain.
According to Iran’s military, drone strikes targeted an ammunition depot at Camp Udairi in Kuwait, headquarters buildings, ammunition depots and connecting bridges at Ali Al Salem Air Base, and military fuel tanks at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) separately claimed its missiles struck US fighter jets stationed at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base.
Kuwait’s Defence Ministry said it was responding to Iranian missile and drone attacks, adding that loud explosions heard across the country were the result of interception operations. The military later announced it had intercepted hostile targets for a second time within hours and urged the public to follow official safety instructions.
Air raid sirens sounded repeatedly across Kuwait throughout the day, while Kuwait Airways announced that most flights had been rescheduled after the country’s airspace was temporarily closed following the attacks.
Jordan’s military said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 10 Iranian missiles that entered the kingdom’s airspace early Saturday. Authorities said there were no casualties or damage, and engineering teams were clearing debris from interception sites.
In Bahrain, warning sirens were activated four times within several hours as authorities urged residents to remain calm and seek shelter. Iran’s military claimed it struck US military assets, aircraft hangars, fuel tanks and communications infrastructure at Sheikh Isa Air Base, saying the facility had been used to support military operations against Iran.
The IRGC also warned countries hosting US military forces to prepare for what it described as a “corresponding response”, urging them to activate civil defence measures and move civilians away from potential military targets. The group claimed to have targeted Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, alleging casualties among US personnel and damage to military infrastructure. Those claims could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, US air strikes intensified across Iran overnight, with explosions reported in the cities of Yazd, Lar, Ahvaz, Sirik, Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, Darab and on Qeshm Island.
Officials in Hormozgan province said US strikes targeted two bridges and a tunnel, killing at least three people and injuring eight others. Iranian media later reported additional US strikes near Jask and along the Bandar Abbas-Rudan road, where two bridges were heavily damaged and several people were reportedly killed and injured.
Iranian media also said US strikes hit electricity facilities and desalination pumps in Jask, cutting drinking water supplies to several villages in the area. Local authorities said they were assessing the damage and working to restore water services.
The Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) and the semi-official Tasnim news agency also reported US attacks near Sirik and Jask, while Iranian media reported explosions in Khorramabad, which they attributed to US missile strikes launched from Kuwait.
Iran’s military also announced that its navy had targeted what it described as a hostile US vessel in the northern Indian Ocean using a shore-to-sea cruise missile.
Separately, the IRGC said one of its newly deployed air defence systems shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over Bushehr.
The group further claimed that four vessels backed by the US military attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz were halted during a combined missile and drone operation.
Iranian media also reported that two oil tankers exploded and caught fire after passing through a mined route south of the Strait of Hormuz. The reports could not immediately be independently verified.
The latest escalation came as satellite imagery showed new damage inside Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant complex, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and elsewhere across the Gulf, describing them as “unacceptable”, according to his spokesman.
The latest developments mark one of the widest regional expansions of the conflict so far, with military operations and missile interceptions reported across multiple Gulf countries as fighting between the United States and Iran continues to intensify.
