President Returns Organ Transplant Bill to Parliament for Reconsideration

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sent the Human Organ Transplantation Bill back to the People’s Majlis, requesting lawmakers to review the legislation once again before it is ratified.

The bill was originally approved by Parliament on May 14 and forwarded to the President for assent on May 19. However, after examining the legislation, the President decided that it requires further consideration.

In a statement, the President’s Office said the decision was made after assessing amendments introduced by Parliament and evaluating potential challenges that could arise during the implementation of several provisions contained in the bill.

The statement noted that the current version of the legislation would benefit from additional review and amendments to ensure it can be effectively enforced in practice.

As a result, the President has exercised his constitutional authority under Article 91(a) of the Constitution to return the bill to the People’s Majlis for reconsideration.

The proposed legislation, which seeks to establish a legal framework for human organ transplantation in the Maldives, will now be reviewed again by Parliament before any further action is taken.
