Home Minister Ali Ihusan and Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed have met with the police officers who took part in the challenging search operation for the missing Italian divers near Alimatha in Vaavu Atoll.
The divers went missing after entering the underwater cave known as “Miyaru Kandu” near Alimatha while diving in the area. A large-scale joint operation involving the Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and foreign divers was later launched to locate them.
According to police, the meeting was held yesterday to recognize the bravery and dedication shown by the police diving team during the dangerous and complex rescue mission.
During the meeting, Minister Ihusan and Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed praised the officers for their courage, professionalism, and hard work throughout the operation. They also highlighted the determination displayed by the divers while carrying out the mission under hazardous conditions.
Police said the minister commended the team for demonstrating the capability and preparedness of the Maldives Police Service through their efforts during the operation.
The officers were further encouraged to continue serving the public with commitment and to uphold their responsibilities with the same level of dedication shown during the search mission.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Faruhadh Fikury and several senior police officials also attended the meeting.
The operation was launched following the disappearance of five Italian tourists who entered the underwater cave system near Alimatha for a dive expedition. Authorities described the search mission as one of the most demanding diving operations carried out in recent years, involving both local and international diving teams.
Police stated that the divers involved in the operation carried out several critical tasks despite the extremely risky underwater conditions.
