The third edition of the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) Guesthouse Symposium 2026 began today at Barceló Nasandhura in Malé, bringing together guesthouse owners, operators and key stakeholders from the tourism industry to discuss the sector’s future.
Speaking at the opening, MIB Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mufaddal Idrees Kumree said the Maldives’ guesthouse sector was experiencing strong growth, with increasing numbers of tourists choosing guesthouse accommodation. He stressed that sustainability must now be a key priority as the industry continues to expand.
Kumree highlighted the importance of protecting the Maldives’ natural environment, noting that tourists visiting local islands seek to experience the country’s distinctive culture and natural resources. He emphasised the need for sustainable practices, including effective waste management and reef conservation, to preserve these resources for the future.
The symposium’s keynote address was delivered by Kiruba Shankar, an internationally recognised professional speaker and online business strategist. His presentation focused on guesthouse marketing, including strategies to help establishments differentiate themselves in a competitive market and build a recognisable identity.
Shankar also discussed how guesthouse operators could use evolving marketing channels to promote their businesses and establish a strong digital presence, particularly as tourists increasingly rely on online platforms to discover and book accommodation.
The annual symposium provides a platform for guesthouse owners, operators and other tourism stakeholders to exchange ideas, share practical experiences and explore new business opportunities. It also aims to address challenges facing the sector and identify ways to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of guesthouses operating across the Maldives.
This year’s event is being held under the theme “Beyond the Stay: Building the Guesthouse of Tomorrow.” The programme will also feature the newly introduced Guesthouse Awards, recognising achievements within the sector.
