The Fodhdhoo Island Council in Noonu Atoll has warned that action will be taken against individuals found abusing or harming cats on the island.

In a statement, the council said it had been receiving complaints that some individuals were mistreating cats living on the island and causing them physical harm. It stressed that animal abuse is a criminal offence and that those responsible could face action under the Animal Welfare Act.

The council said such behaviour would not be tolerated and urged residents to refrain from harming animals.

It also reminded pet owners and those keeping animals to ensure they do so in a manner that does not cause inconvenience to the public.

Meanwhile, the council has designated specific areas where residents are permitted to leave food for cats. These include the Green House area and a location away from the Local Beach.

Feeding animals in public communal areas, residential compounds and vacant plots of land is prohibited, the council said, warning that action could also be taken against individuals who leave food for animals in unauthorised locations.
