Nine Maldivian men have been arrested in connection with a case involving the alleged rape of a 22-year-old woman and the suspected sexual abuse and exploitation of children on an island in the southern Maldives.
Police received a report on Tuesday concerning allegations that a group of people had sexually assaulted the woman on an island under Upper South Police.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Shiyam previously said investigators had also identified allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation involving children during the investigation.
Shiyam confirmed today that nine men had been arrested in connection with the case.
“A special team has been sent from Malé to investigate the case, and they are currently actively working on the island,” Shiyam said.
He added that further information would be shared as the investigation progresses.
Further details are expected.
