The Maldives and Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in combating illicit drug trafficking and drug abuse.
The agreement was exchanged in Islamabad on Wednesday during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to Pakistan, as the two countries seek to deepen cooperation in law enforcement and security.
Maldivian Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Interior Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi represented their respective sides during the exchange of the agreement.
The MoU was among 20 agreements exchanged between the two countries during the visit, covering areas including defence, maritime security, healthcare, education, technology and trade.
The agreement comes as the Maldives and Pakistan seek to expand cooperation across security and institutional capacity building.
During a joint press statement, the two leaders highlighted the broader scope of their discussions, which included policing, defence cooperation and training opportunities.
The state visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, with both governments expressing their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through practical cooperation.
