The Maldives and Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in information technology, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, digital skills and technological innovation.
The agreement was exchanged during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to Pakistan on Wednesday, as the two countries seek to expand cooperation across emerging technologies and digital development.
The MoU was among 20 agreements exchanged between the two countries during a ceremony attended by senior officials from both governments.
Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Maldivian Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan represented their respective sides in the exchange of the document.
Speaking during a joint press statement with President Muizzu, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif also offered Pakistan’s technical expertise to support the Maldives’ development of data centres.
Sharif said Pakistan had established data centres of varying capacities and was ready to share its experience and professional capabilities with the Maldives.
President Muizzu said the discussions between the two countries covered cooperation in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, digitalisation and future technologies, particularly in creating opportunities for young people.
The agreement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in technology, skills development and institutional capacity building.
The state visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Pakistan.
