President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to strengthening domestic food production and expanding market access for locally grown agricultural products, aiming to enhance national food security and reduce import dependency.

Marking Farmers’ Day via social media, the President outlined plans to scale up the cultivation of suitable local crops to meet national demand while empowering farmers through modern agricultural technologies to boost their incomes. He emphasized that boosting local output shields the Maldives from global supply chain disruptions and international price volatility, while simultaneously retaining foreign currency, creating island jobs, and driving economic growth.

Connecting sustainable farming and reduced import dependency directly to national independence, the President praised the vital role Maldivian farmers play in ensuring economic stability and resilience. He also extended warm greetings to everyone in the agricultural sector on the occasion of National Farmers’ Day, which has been observed annually on 15 October since 2009.
