Ali Sahil, the sole suspect accused in the brutal August 2022 murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, has filed an appeal against a cumulative three-year prison sentence handed down to him on secondary charges.
The state originally raised five separate charges against Sahil of (Finifenmaage, F. Nilandhoo) following the gruesome discovery of the Fuvahmulah native’s body in a Malé apartment. Due to the exceptionally graphic and inhumane nature of the crime, the trial is being held behind closed doors, and authorities have strictly withheld the specific details of the charges from the public.
The current appeal challenges a Criminal Court verdict that found Sahil guilty on two unspecified counts, resulting in a prison sentence of three years, one month, and six days. A previous attempt by Sahil’s legal defense to appeal the ruling was rejected due to administrative and documentation errors; however, the case was officially refiled with the High Court last week. The appellate court has yet to declare whether it will formally accept the case for review.
Meanwhile, the main trial regarding the remaining charges has concluded, leaving only the presentation of closing summaries before a final verdict is reached. A closing hearing scheduled for last week was postponed due to a technical issue. The trial has faced multiple delays, compounded by the fact that the Attorney General’s Office stripped Sahil of his state-funded legal aid after he repeatedly refused to cooperate with his court-appointed defense attorneys.
