The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), in collaboration with Male’ Isra’hvehinge Naadhee, conducted an awareness programme for senior citizens to commemorate World Elder Abuse Prevention Day.
The interactive session used role-play activities and group discussions to educate older persons about their rights, available support systems, and the challenges they may face in exercising those rights in everyday life.
According to HRCM, the initiative aimed to empower senior citizens by improving their understanding of human rights protections and encouraging greater community engagement in safeguarding the wellbeing of older persons.
The event brought together a large number of elderly participants, who took part in practical exercises designed to explore real-life situations involving elder rights, abuse prevention, and access to support services.
HRCM stated that raising awareness remains an important step in preventing abuse, neglect, and discrimination against older persons, while fostering a society that respects and protects the dignity of senior citizens.
World Elder Abuse Prevention Day is observed annually to highlight the importance of protecting older people from physical, emotional, financial, and social abuse, while promoting their rights and wellbeing within communities.
