As millions of pilgrims gather for Hajj 1447, Saudi Arabia has placed its military and air defense forces on full operational readiness to protect the holy sites and secure one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
Footage released by the Saudi Ministry of Defense shows the Kingdom’s Air Defense Forces deployed around Makkah with advanced radar systems, camouflaged military vehicles, and mobile missile launchers positioned to counter any potential aerial threats targeting the region.
The footage also includes scenes from around Makkah including the Abraj Al Bait Clock Tower and shows military personnel operating advanced radar systems, mobile air defense units, and missile launchers believed to be Patriot systems. The video carries the message: “Saudi Air Defenses Ready for Hajj Season.”
Saudi authorities say the measures are part of a comprehensive Hajj security and defense plan involving the air force, land forces, naval forces, civil defense teams, medical services, and specialized emergency units.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the Royal Saudi Air Force has intensified airspace monitoring operations over Makkah and the holy sites as Hajj approaches. Missions include aerial reconnaissance, emergency surveillance, air traffic management, and coordination with security checkpoints surrounding the pilgrimage zones.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that all branches of the armed forces are now participating in the Hajj operational plan. Land forces and military police units have been assigned crowd control duties and hazardous material detection around the Grand Mosque and major pilgrim routes, while naval units are securing maritime entry points and deploying drone surveillance and explosive detection teams.
The Kingdom has also activated large-scale medical and emergency response operations. More than 2,160 medical personnel have reportedly been deployed across 41 Hajj locations, including hospitals, clinics, ambulance centers, and field medical units with over 1,100 beds available for emergencies. Four medical evacuation aircraft are on standby around the clock to transport critical cases from the holy sites.
The heightened military visibility comes as regional tensions remain elevated across the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has increasingly emphasized aerial defense and counter-drone capabilities in recent years after repeated drone and missile threats targeting the Kingdom. Last month, Saudi officials announced that air defense systems intercepted dozens of drones over the Eastern Province.
This year’s preparations have also included highly public military parades and readiness demonstrations in and around Makkah, with footage circulating online showing security convoys, helicopters, armored vehicles, and coordinated exercises ahead of the pilgrimage season.
Hajj 1447 is expected to peak around the Day of Arafat on May 26 before concluding with Eid al-Adha celebrations on May 27. Saudi officials say more than 1.5 million international pilgrims have already arrived in the Kingdom.
