ISTANBUL — Activists released after being detained during Israel’s interception of the recent Gaza-bound “Global Sumud” flotilla arrived in Istanbul this week showing visible bruises, abrasions, and other marks, prompting renewed allegations of mistreatment while in custody.
Photos and Videos widely shared online showed several participants with dark bruises on their arms, shoulders, and backs, while others appeared to have scratches and contusions. The images quickly circulated across social media, fueling outrage among pro-Palestinian activists and human rights supporters.
Participants from the flotilla accused Israeli military and prison personnel of using excessive force during the boarding operation and subsequent detention process. Some former detainees alleged they were beaten, dragged, restrained for long periods, and subjected to degrading treatment while being processed before deportation.
The flotilla, organized as part of an effort to challenge Israel’s blockade on Gaza, was intercepted by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean Sea earlier this month. Israeli authorities later deported many of the activists to their home countries, including Türkiye.
Injuries visible in released photographs, including linear scratches, swelling, and dark bruising, continued to raise concerns among supporters and rights advocates.
Israeli officials have denied accusations of systematic torture or abuse, maintaining that security forces acted lawfully during the interception. Supporters of Israel argued that some injuries could have resulted from resistance during boarding procedures or from pre-existing conditions, while critics accused authorities of attempting to downplay detainees’ accounts.
No independent forensic investigation has yet publicly verified the exact cause of the injuries seen in the viral images.
The incident has added to growing international scrutiny surrounding Israel’s handling of Gaza solidarity flotillas, which have long been a flashpoint in the broader conflict over the blockade of Gaza.
