President Allocates MVR 7 Million Annually from Green Fund to Strengthen Environmental Protection

President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a new initiative to allocate MVR 7 million annually from the Green Fund to support environmental conservation and sustainability efforts across the Maldives.

The announcement was made in a message marking World Environment Day, where the President emphasized the need for stronger action to protect the country’s fragile ecosystems and preserve the environment for future generations.

President Muizzu noted that one of the biggest challenges facing environmental protection efforts has been the lack of sufficient financial resources to implement long-term conservation measures. To address this, the government has decided to dedicate a fixed annual allocation from the Green Fund to strengthen environmental management and climate resilience initiatives.

According to the President, the funding will be used to improve the management and maintenance of protected areas, support biodiversity conservation programmes, conduct environmental monitoring and research, and facilitate restoration projects where needed.

The allocation will also support scientific studies, environmental data collection, public awareness campaigns, and efforts to strengthen technical expertise within the environmental sector.

In addition, part of the funding will be directed toward community engagement initiatives, including programmes conducted in collaboration with non-governmental organisations, schools, and environmental clubs. These initiatives aim to encourage wider public participation in conservation activities and promote environmental stewardship among younger generations.

President Muizzu stated that the new funding commitment will provide greater stability for environmental protection programmes while enabling the implementation of larger and more sustainable conservation projects in the years ahead.

He added that preserving the Maldives’ natural environment requires collective responsibility and long-term investment, particularly as the country continues to face increasing environmental and climate-related challenges.
