A 21-year-old Bangladeshi national has been arrested after tearing his passport while being escorted by immigration officers and subsequently damaging property inside the Maldives Immigration holding facility.
The suspect has been identified as Sheikh MD Masum Latif.
The Criminal Court today ordered that he be remanded in custody for 15 days.
According to the court order, the man was residing in the Maldives in violation of the country’s immigration laws and regulations. While being escorted by immigration officers, he tore his passport. He later caused property damage while being held in Immigration’s holding cell.
The court order further stated that an assessment had been conducted following his detention, as his behaviour suggested a possible mental health condition. However, the assessment report did not indicate any obstacle to conducting a criminal investigation or proceeding with prosecution against him.
