First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has extended greetings and well wishes to the Maldivian people on the occasion of Victory Day, commemorating the country’s victory over the attempted coup on 3 November 1988.
In a post on X, Sajidha paid tribute to the national heroes who fought to defend the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty, remembering those who sacrificed their lives in the defence of the nation. She also offered prayers for Allah’s mercy upon the fallen heroes and martyrs.
The First Lady further prayed for the Maldivian nation to remain steadfast in its independence and peace, and for the continued prosperity of the country.
Her message comes as the Maldives marks the 38th anniversary of Victory Day, which commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup on 3 November 1988, when Maldivian and Sri Lankan militant forces linked to the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) launched an attack on the capital.
The attack was repelled with assistance from Indian forces under Operation Cactus. A total of 19 Maldivians were killed during the attempted coup, including eight military personnel and 11 civilians.
