Public consultations underway for 15MW solar project across 13 islands

Public consultations are underway across 13 islands under a 15-megawatt (MW) solar energy package aimed at expanding renewable energy generation and strengthening electricity infrastructure in the Maldives.

The package is being implemented under the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project and includes solar power installations, upgrades and expansion of island electricity grids, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said the consultations are intended to inform residents about the project’s objectives and the benefits of solar power generation, while providing information on how concerns and complaints related to the project can be raised.

The latest consultations were held in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, and Maabaidhoo and Kunahandhoo in Laamu Atoll.

Representatives from island councils and utility service providers attended the meetings, where residents were able to ask questions, share feedback and offer suggestions regarding the project.

The consultations also provide an opportunity to discuss efforts to support the Maldives’ transition towards cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy sources.
