Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc (MTCC) has completed concrete construction works on three finger jetties at Malé North Harbour, marking further progress in an MVR 18.98 million harbour development project aimed at improving vessel berthing and passenger accessibility.

The three jetties, each measuring 15 metres in length, have reached the next stage of construction, with the remaining works involving the installation of timber decking, mooring bollards and lighting systems.

Construction began in early October, with MTCC reporting on October 16 that workers were carrying out column installation and reinforcement activities in preparation for the concrete works.

The development forms part of a wider project involving the construction of six finger jetties at the harbour. Under the project specifications, three jetties will measure 25 metres in length, while the remaining three will be 15 metres long. All six structures will have a width of six metres.

The project is intended to address congestion at Malé North Harbour, where limited berthing space can make it difficult for multiple vessels to accommodate passengers simultaneously.

Once operational, the additional jetties are expected to increase berthing capacity by providing more designated spaces for vessels, particularly speedboats operating through the harbour.

The new structures are also designed to improve passenger safety and convenience by providing more direct access to berthed vessels. This is expected to reduce situations in which passengers must cross other boats to reach speedboats positioned further away from the quay.

With concrete works now completed on the three shorter jetties, the project will proceed with the remaining installation activities as MTCC continues developing the harbour’s passenger and vessel-handling facilities.
