Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has called for stricter adherence to maritime safety regulations following a serious launch accident that resulted in significant damage to the vessel and injuries to two passengers.
The incident involved a launch named Ta Guard, which was travelling from K. Villingili to Giri Lankanfushi when the accident occurred. In addition to extensive damage to the vessel, two individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Commenting on the incident, Mayor Azim described it as a deeply unfortunate event. He noted that many serious maritime accidents continue to occur due to failures in fully complying with established safety regulations and operational procedures for sea travel.
Azim stressed the importance of taking all necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents from happening again. He urged vessel operators, crew members and all parties involved in maritime transport to strictly follow existing safety standards and regulations.
He further highlighted that adherence to maritime safety measures remains one of the most effective ways to reduce risks at sea and protect the lives of passengers and crew.
The mayor also expressed sympathy to those injured in the accident and wished them a speedy recovery.
