President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for collective action to safeguard the world’s oceans, warning that increasing environmental challenges require greater urgency and stronger international cooperation.

In a message marking World Ocean Day, President Muizzu emphasized that healthy oceans are vital to sustaining life and securing the future of the planet. He said the issue is particularly important for the Maldives, where the ocean plays a central role in the nation’s economy, food security and environmental wellbeing.

The President highlighted a number of initiatives being undertaken to strengthen marine conservation efforts, including sustainable fisheries management, expanded marine research, coral reef monitoring, coral restoration programmes and evidence-based policies aimed at improving resilience to climate change.

He also pointed to growing environmental threats such as ocean warming, coral bleaching and coastal erosion, stressing that these challenges underscore the need for more decisive action to protect marine ecosystems.

President Muizzu said safeguarding the ocean requires a shared commitment from governments, institutions and communities, adding that international cooperation will be essential in addressing the challenges facing the world’s seas.

World Ocean Day is observed annually on June 8 to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and encourage efforts to conserve and sustainably manage marine resources.
