Maldives Re-Export Revenue Climbs 6.8% to USD 319 Million

The Maldives has recorded a 6.8 percent increase in re-export earnings, reaching USD 319 million so far in 2026, according to figures published by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The latest figures, included in the central bank’s Monthly Statistics report, show an increase from USD 299 million during the corresponding period last year.

The growth comes as the Maldives continues developing its sea-to-air cargo operations, which enable goods arriving by sea to be transported onwards to international destinations by air.

Sea-to-air cargo services support trade growth

The sea-to-air cargo model allows imported shipments to be transferred between maritime and aviation transport networks before being sent to overseas markets.

Introduced in May 2024, the service has attracted participation from more than 17 airlines, expanding the Maldives’ role in international cargo transportation.

According to the reported figures, the service handled 633 tonnes of outbound cargo in July 2026.

Government seeks to expand international cargo operations

The government has identified the Maldives’ international air connectivity as an opportunity to strengthen re-export activities and generate additional economic benefits.

Sea-to-air cargo services, already established in several international markets, offer a means of facilitating the movement of goods between countries through the Maldives.

The continued development of these operations could support the country’s ambitions to expand its participation in international logistics and trade.

The latest MMA figures indicate growth in re-export earnings alongside the development of cargo handling services, although the report does not establish how much of the revenue increase was directly attributable to the sea-to-air programme.
