The Maldivian government’s proposed 2027 state budget is intended to establish the policy and economic foundations needed to transform the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040, Minister of Finance and Planning Hassan Zareer has said.

Presenting the budget to the People’s Majlis, Zareer described the proposal as a key component of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s long-term development vision, with particular emphasis on economic stability, fiscal sustainability and responsible debt management.

The minister said the budget would support the introduction of policies necessary to achieve the country’s 2040 development ambitions while strengthening the government’s ability to finance public services and national development.

Economic stability and fiscal sustainability prioritised

According to Zareer, achieving developed-nation status will require sustained policy implementation, careful decision-making and improvements to the management of public finances.

He said the measures proposed in the budget are intended to strengthen the Maldives’ economic foundations, expand public services and create additional opportunities for residents across the country’s islands.

The government also aims to ensure that economic progress achieved today contributes to improved living standards and greater prosperity for future generations.

Zareer emphasised that the budget has been formulated to support macroeconomic stability, sustainable government finances and debt management, alongside investments intended to deliver tangible improvements to people’s lives.

National development plan to guide long-term priorities

The finance minister outlined plans to establish a national development framework that would provide a clear direction for achieving the Maldives’ 2040 objectives.

Under the proposed approach, development initiatives would be organised around defined national priorities, with an emphasis on strengthening the economy and restoring public finances to a sustainable position.

Zareer identified the availability of financial resources as an essential requirement for implementing the development plan, particularly in supporting economic growth and investments that benefit the population.

The government also intends to increase state revenue sustainably, improve the planning and implementation of public investments, and ensure that national resources are managed efficiently and responsibly.

Ras Malé development highlighted as strategic investment

The minister identified the planned waterfront and marina bay project in Ras Malé as an important initiative supporting the government’s 2040 development vision.

He said the project is expected to contribute to economic productivity, generate additional government revenue and support efforts to diversify the Maldivian economy.

Zareer also linked the broader development strategy to potential advances in renewable energy, describing the sector as another area in which the government expects significant progress.

The minister presented these initiatives as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the country’s economic resilience and establish new sources of growth.

The proposed 2027 budget will be subject to consideration by the People’s Majlis.
