Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has reaffirmed the Maldives’ ambition to become a developed country by 2040, saying the country’s future will be built through greater productivity, economic diversification, resilient infrastructure and investment in its people.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, the Vice President said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had set a clear ambition for the Maldives to become a developed country by 2040.
He said the government is pursuing the goal by raising productivity, diversifying the economy, building resilient infrastructure, expanding renewable energy and investing in the Maldivian people.
“Our future will be built by Maldivians,” the Vice President said.
He also said the international system could either widen or narrow the choices available to the Maldives.
According to the Vice President, technology transfer, resilient supply chains and accessible finance can expand the country’s choices, while technological dependence, external shocks and unsustainable debt can limit them.
He said international partnerships must therefore build national capacity and support national ambitions, rather than create new forms of dependence.
The 2040 ambition has also been reaffirmed by President Muizzu during 2026.
Speaking at the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum in May, the President described Vision 2040 as the country’s national development blueprint for becoming a fully developed, inclusive and sustainable nation. He said the vision is centred on people-focused development, technology and environmental responsibility, while highlighting the role of the private sector in shaping the country’s economic future.
The Government’s 2026 Budget is also aligned with the objective of transforming the Maldives into a developed and self-sufficient nation by 2040, with priorities including the digital economy, renewable energy, regional development, fisheries and other productive industries.
The Vice President said the Maldives’ development ambitions must ultimately be supported by stronger national capacity and partnerships that leave the country more capable of shaping its own future.
