A man has been remanded in custody for 15 days in connection with a dangerous road accident that occurred on Sosun Magu in Malé on Saturday night.
The accident occurred when a motorcycle travelling at high speed collided with another motorcycle, leaving three people injured.
Police media officials said that a person was arrested in connection with the crash on Sunday.
The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Maahu Hassan, Th. Dhigamigilee, Hithadhoo. He was brought before the court for a decision on his detention and was subsequently remanded for 15 days.
According to the court order, the suspect was detained under Article 49 of the Constitution and Articles 59 and 60 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
The court cited concerns over public safety if he were released, noting allegations that he had been riding without a valid driving licence, at high speed and in a dangerous zigzagging manner. Police also stated that he had previously been stopped and fined more than four times this year for driving without a licence.
Three people were injured in the crash: two Maldivian men aged 21 and 22, and a 26-year-old Maldivian woman. The two men are receiving treatment at IGMH, while the woman is being treated at ADK Hospital.
Video footage circulating in connection with the accident shows the woman lying on the road with significant bleeding from her head and appearing unable to move immediately after the crash. The footage also shows the two men suffering various injuries.
Police said the 21-year-old rider of one of the motorcycles involved did not hold a valid driving licence.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Dangerous road accidents have become an increasing concern in the Malé-Hulhumalé area, including the Sinamalé Bridge. Authorities have identified speeding, illegal overtaking, failure to stop at red lights, phone use while driving, and driving without a licence or sufficient experience among the factors contributing to such incidents.
Police and the Transport Ministry have been taking various measures to address road safety, including increasing roadside checkpoints and patrols, towing vehicles without proper licences or registration, and using speed cameras to identify and penalise traffic violations.
Additional measures include installing speed bumps in accident-prone areas, improving road signs and street lighting, and conducting public awareness campaigns encouraging helmet use and safer road behaviour.
However, the growing number of vehicles in densely populated Malé and failures by some motorists and pedestrians to properly follow traffic rules continue to pose challenges to reducing road accidents.
According to police statistics, 2,100 road accidents have been reported so far this year.
