Foreign Minister Iruthisham departs for Iraq

Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has departed for Baghdad, Iraq, to attend the 52nd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The session, hosted by Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will focus on strengthening cooperation among OIC member states amid global uncertainty, with Palestine expected to be a key issue on the agenda.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the Maldives will advocate for the protection of Palestinian rights and support resolutions aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state. Discussions will also address measures to protect Palestinian civilians and strengthen the implementation of initiatives to support them.

The meeting will also focus on addressing economic challenges facing Islamic countries due to conflicts, including difficulties in securing food and essential commodities. Cooperation in agriculture, technology, digitalisation, healthcare and social development will also be discussed.

The Maldives, which has been an OIC member for 50 years, is also expected to hold discussions with Iraq’s foreign minister and other counterparts to strengthen bilateral relations.

The OIC is the world’s second-largest intergovernmental organisation after the United Nations, comprising 57 member states.
